Wanted Back-bencher Last-ranker Teacher
Learning Forward India PLP Session II - Kalpana Jain, The Iconic School
21st Century Educators
The Educators at The Iconic School are reading Kavita Ghosh’s Book for the Level II of the Learning Forward India three-year Professional Learning Program.
The 21st century portrays a plethora of opportunities for every individual of the society. This calls for a great change in systems and skills of individuals. School education will become the first platform for this change. The stakeholders of this change are the school management, Educators and students. The change here means that most of the school systems need to be upgraded or revised. These systems include focus on the overall development of the student, hiring Educators who are ready to experiment and are progressive in thoughts and actions. The management needs to revise the conventional policies that give enough freedom for the school, educators and students to evolve.
The defined change can lead to multiple developments as the potential of every individual is recognized and catered. In such an environment the education system will be able to provide opportunities and challenges to students to create their individual development path as As per their interest. This conducive environment will build a human Possessing 21st century skills. Therefore the partnership between schools and parents need to be extremely strong in order to support the interest of the individuals. The need of the hour is to move beyond the conventional methodology of recruiting the Educators. The progressive educator need not be an excellent academician, but should possess the skills to address the diversity in the classroom respecting and bringing out the best from every individual.

Igniting the Spark in Learners
Join me at the Global Educators Fest 2019
Lina Ashar did her primary schooling in England before moving to Australia, where she acquired her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Melbourne’s Victoria College. In 1991, Lina came to India on a year-long sabbatical from college, while connecting with her roots, she landed up taking a school job in suburban Mumbai, an experience which changed her life. Back then, the education system in India was still grappling with a straitjacketed approach to education, leaving no scope for the overall development of the child, which was a complete contrast to the milieu of what she had studied. Lina chose to stay back in India to change the antiquated approach to education which existed then. Her conviction to offer an education which sets the child as its centre led her to start her first preschool in Bandra (Mumbai) in the year 1993 with 25 students.
The journey from one Kangaroo Kids Preschool to a network of Kangaroo Kids Preschools and Billabong High International Schools across 29 different cities in India as well as in Dubai, Maldives and Qatar has been a phenomenal one. Lina’s unique approach, injection of potent solutions and radical processes to ensure that the quality of education is improved was instantaneously well received and noted. Lina has been promoting and practising ‘topic-based learning’ since 2002, something that the Indian media lauded the Finland education system for, very recently. Lina has been extremely passionate about creating a purpose of learning and allowing children to be thinkers, innovators, problem solvers and to orchestrate experiences that will result in their overall development.
With an intention to spark human greatness in every student, Lina was the first in the Indian education industry to introduce a learner-centric methodology and introduce innovative ways of learning by providing an integrated activity and theme-based learning. The industry has recognised and awarded Lina several times over for her unique and meaningful contributions to the sector, notable among them being:
- A leading woman in education at the Women Leaders in India Awards 2015 by iiglobal
- Nationwide winner of the Best K12 innovative curriculum by Franchise India 2015
- Alumni Excellence winner by Australian High Commission 2015
- Voted by over 500,00 people to the MTC Global Top 10 Thinkers’ – 2015 among more than 35 nominees from different walks of life whose work has a significant impact in their sector, as determined by the independent Board of Jury at MTC Global HQ.
- Lifetime Education Leadership Award by EduWorld 2014
- Key Speaker at the symposium of Indian Career Education and Development Council (ICEDC) 2014 at the American School of Bombay
- Panellist at The Economic Times Future of Learning Summit 2014
- Awarded Leading Women Entrepreneur Recognition at several fora between 2010 and 2014, including Times of India and iGlobal.
Lina dreams of a society in which every child enjoys the right to a joyful childhood and quality education.

HAPPY TEACHERS MAKE A HAPPY CLASSROOM
Have you ever asked any teacher why they show up to work every day? If you have, you probably heard something like “for my students” and because my kids are my purpose.
Most educators are selfless in their pursuit of a bright, promising future for their learners. When students score well on projects and exams, demonstrate critical thinking and display signs of empathy and compassion, teachers are happiest and happy teachers will directly lead to a happy classroom.
Happy teachers produce better performing and high achieving students who lead to grateful, supportive parents, and who doesn’t want that?
Happiness and a sense of purpose go hand in hand. Technology cannot make up for an inspiring and motivated teacher who can be the pulse of her classroom. It is not smartboards that can create ripples of happiness, it is a caring and a happy teacher who touches the lives of 50 robust children and who can spread sunshine as the essential ingredient of happiness.
To make the classroom happy one should remember that not only should student happiness be the aim of education, but the teacher’s happiness should be the aim of education.‘A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child – Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’

Do Schools Kill Creativity - Aysha Tak
All education systems
globally have a ‘hierarchy’, with math and language at the top, social sciences
in the middle and arts at the bottom. This is because of the childhood education the system was developed to satisfy the industrial revolution of the 19th century,
where math and science were essential for jobs, but we need to understand that
times have changed.
While once
people just needed school for a good job, then a bachelor degree, and now these
degrees are no guarantee for a job. Degrees have had a form of inflation over
time, and this shows it is shifting too quickly. Having children go to school
just to attend university is not really equipping them to work any more!
We know 3 things about
intelligence
- It is diverse – we think in many ways – visually, in sound, movement and abstract, being a few.
- It is dynamic – original ideas come about from the interaction of many different ways of seeing things.
- It is distinct – people have their way of doing things – Ken’s example is a ‘problem student’ who couldn’t sit still at school, but when moved to a dance school fit in fine – she needed to move to think. Her dance skills went on to give her immense fame and fortune, bringing value to millions of people.
In modern times, she
would probably have been given ADHD medication and been put told to calm down.
We need to redefine our education system – our current way is one of ‘strip-mining’ our children for the most desired properties, in the same way, we mine the Earth for ore. We now need to use our imaginations and creativity wisely, to face an uncertain and problematic future. We may not see this future close and clear, but we do need to equip our children to conquer it in the best ways possible.

Human Nature
The nature that a
human possesses is far similar to that of animals regarding territory. Most human
beings do not go beyond their own territory. Instead, every human being must
explore in other territories.
Everyone is a lion in
his own kingdom, but one must not become a cat in other's territory. This is a
very important quality in all human beings that they must not hesitate while
discovering another territory.
For this purpose, one
must have the confidence to show his talent in the other area. One must believe in
him/her self. Believing is a strong power that can make you do everything. One
must never be shy. If you are blessed with a talent, it is just needed to be
explored. One must have a courageous heart and shine everywhere.
One must be capable to
do everything and have the guts to bright in others territory too. His
ownership must be shown into next territory. These qualities will make a man
perfect.
At last, we would like
to conclude that people should try more and more to interact instead of being aloof.
One must have good behaviour and must be filled with good qualities that will
help a human being to achieve more in life.
